3 Major Signs of a Toenail Fungal Infection
Do you avoid going barefoot? Do you always make it a point to wear close-toed shoes to hide your toenails? Do you long for a relaxing pedicure, but are too embarrassed to show your feet in a salon? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be suffering from onychomycosis, or more commonly known as a toenail fungal infection.
Toenail fungus is a common infection that affects over 850 million people worldwide. It usually infects the nail bed itself or the area surrounding the nail. It’s more common in toenails than in fingernails and usually starts at the end of the nail first and spreads further toward the cuticle.
If you think you have a toenail fungal infection, here are the signs to look for:
Colour
The most obvious indicator of a toenail fungal infection is the colour of your nails. The fungus causes the affected area of your nails to turn a white-yellow or yellow-brown colour. They may also become dull and lack their usual shine. A very early indicator of what might be toenail fungus is a small white or yellow dot under the nail bed. As the fungal infection begins to spread, part of the toenail will usually start to darken. The surrounding area of the nail may also become red and swollen. There are a number of conditions that can look like a fungal infection, so it’s important to see a podiatrist to have it analysed.
Shape
If you notice your nails becoming thick, dry and eventually starting to crumble you may have a toenail fungal infection. The toenail can also become misshapen as it grows and grooves or ridges may start appearing. The nail may even begin to separate from the nail bed, and in some cases fall off completely, which can cause discomfort.
Feeling
Whilst it is more uncommon to be painful a nail fungal infectioncan give off a mild odour. The appearance of your toenails can become quite displeasing and affect your overall demeanor as well. Most signs of a toenail fungal infection are plainly visible, which in some cases causes many people to be unhappy or even mildly depressed because they’re embarrassed by it and feel at a loss of how to get rid of it.
The good news is you don’t have to live with a toenail fungal infection. There are treatment options available.
